Can software make a volunteer camp actually low-effort?

Low Effort Camp App

  • React
  • Shift calculator

Hypothesis

Self-organised camps run on spreadsheets and guilt. A small purpose-built app — camp overview, fair-share shift calculator, who's-doing-what — should replace both, and be buildable in an evening now that AI writes the code.

What we built

A camp management web app for a Borderland 2026 camp: member overview and a shift calculator that turns "we all pitch in" into visible, fair numbers per person. Open source, built fast with AI, shaped by the camp's actual coordination pain rather than a feature list.

Learnings

  • The shift calculator is the whole product — fairness made visible dissolves the recurring "who's actually contributing" conversation before it starts.
  • Community tools win by being under-built: no accounts, no notifications, one page people can open from a chat link.
  • "Buildable in an evening" is a real threshold now, and it changes what's worth building — tools for one camp, one event, one season.
